Born in 2002, Newurban has gone from strength to strength and is continuing to grow and make a firm impression on the specialist British hat market. Although Newurban is a fresh, relatively new brand, the company was formed by Allon Zloof using the knowledge and impressive business heritage built up from a more traditional family accessories firm. By adapting and updating these sound business foundations for a younger and more current market, a brand new generation of hats were born – Newurban. Feeling unfulfilled with his career in the legal profession, Allon jumped at the chance to embark on a more creative path when his father asked him to look after the family accessories business. “Throughout my childhood, I would go to work with my father in school holidays, so I had already been immersed in that type of work. On the first day there I knew that I wouldn’t be going back to work as a solicitor. I had been feeling frustrated in the law and craved a more creative career and this felt much more rewarding”. When Allon’s father retired in 2002, the established hat company changed direction to concentrate on a younger more fashion-forward market, and so Newurban was launched. Newurban set out to produce traditional hats but for the non-traditional urban market , trendy yet commercial but always representing great value, so the brand name was devised to reflect this image. Allon soon found that his legal background brought many advantages to the fashion business as he prides himself in the fact that meticulous and great attention to detail is paid at every step of the way. Joining the fashion industry from a more business orientated background also means that Allon fully understands the importance of supply. “It’s no good having the best product in the world that is in great demand, if you cannot fulfill your orders. Also, the quality of each item must be as high as possible each and every time and that is something we pride ourselves in”. Working with a series of specialist hat producers all around the world, Newurban are able to call on different factories for the specific hat style or fabric they have expertise in. As a young, growing business, Newurban has learnt along the way the importance of quality and presenting good value for money to their customers so have focused on significantly increasing the quality of the products and materials used. The past year has seen the Newurban label becoming highly visible with the company being recognized and honoured by a broad selection of UK fashion publications. With a thorough PR campaign underway, Newurban hats have already been featured in The Daily Telegraph, New Woman, More, Star, Front, Ellegirl, Closer, Bliss for Brides, Take a Break, Sugar, Woman & Home, Boys Toys, New, Stranger, Essentials and Happy amongst others. Newurban has also entered into an exciting new partnership with established event organizers Hat Club, with regular events taking place throughout the UK, Ibiza and Dubai with dancing to upfront house music. For summer 2007, the story and direction for Newurban is all about texture with luxurious fabrics and finishes for contemporary classic hats. Continuing with their trademark trilbies and flat caps, these styles are crafted from fabrics such as canvas, lace, straw, rafia and Jute. Newurban has also launched its new Funkytime range of trilby hats and flat caps, using fresh and vibrant designs rarely seen in the traditional hat world. Looking into the future, the main plan is to continue developing the hat business and to expand Newurban’s outlets both nationally and globally.
